Pilgrimage of the Mukachevo Eparchy faithful to the Vatican

Over 400 pilgrims from Transcarpathia visited Rome and Vatican City in Italy from December 11 - 18, 2011. In 2011, our Mukachevo Eparchy celebrated a chain of jubilees related to the Blessed Martyr Theodore Romzha: the 100th year of his birth; the 75th year of his priestly ordination and the 10th year of his beatification. For that reason among many others, a pilgrimage to Rome was planned, where also 75 years ago Blessed Theodore was ordained as a priest. And God made it happen so that exactly this year, in 2011, and not in 2012 as was earlier planned, the Christmas tree for Saint Peter's Square was chosen from Theodore’s native Transcarpathia.

Saints Cyril and Methodius – highly honored in Transcarpathia

The Eparchial Otpust took place in the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the village Storozhnytsya, District of Uzhgorod, where on July 14 Thanksgiving Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was headed by Bishop Milan Šašik. (Photos of the event). Vladyka recaled the words of the Apostolic letter of the Roman Pontiff, Blessed John Paul II, written for the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the Union of Uzhgorod:  «If Uzhgorod Union follows the footsteps of the Council of Florence then it is rightly considered also in the context of a close spiritual connection with the mission of the Slavic Apostles, Saints Cyril and Methodius, whose preaching spread from the Grand Moravian Kingdom up to the Carpathian Mountains.  Therefore faithful of those Churches that originate from Uzhgorod Union can rightly consider themselves heirs of the Cyril and Methodius heritage.”

The 8th Pilgrimage of Nations that took place on July 20 in Tyachiv was also devoted to the 1150th Jubilee anniversary of the beginning of the evangelization mission by Saints Cyril and Methodius and their disciples in Central Europe. (Photos of the event). To this solemnity arrived Apostolic Exarch of the Macedonian Byzantine Catholics, Vladyka Kiro Stojanov. He addressed the faithful with following words: “I am glad to see you in a great multitude. I am glad that the cult of Saints Cyril and Methodius is alive among you. I wish that following the example of the Saints Cyril and Methodius, whom Blessed John Paul II proclaimed Co-Patrons of Europe that remained faithful to the successor of the Apostle Saint Peter, you would always remain faithful to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church led by the Pope of Rome, whom Jesus Christ appointed as the Head of His Church here on earth. I would like to entrust our Church in Macedonia to your prayers … so that we also would follow the true way in the footsteps of Saints Cyril and Methodius.” In conclusion Vladyka Milan mentioned: “Connection of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Rome is very important, because they are considered as the Apostles of Slavs also by the Christians that are not united with Rome, those that are of the Orthodox Church. This is very good, because these Saints can lead us to the unity of Christ’s Church.”

On Sunday, July 21 the solemnities continued in Mukachevo (micro-district Rosvyhovo). There was celebrated first Divine Liturgy in the biggest church dedicated to the Apostles Saints Cyril and Methodius on the territory of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy. (Photos of the event). Construction of this particular church will be soon completed under the leadership of Father Volodymyr Buryshyn. Following the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy there was held procession to the memorial of Saints Cyril and Methodius downtown. (Photos of the event).
